CPA to use latest technology, AI to monitor markets

Muscat – Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) has announced the deployment of latest technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), to monitor markets in Oman through a system integrating consumers, wholesalers and retailers.

The total amount collected in fines from violators was over RO3mn in nine years, while over RO16mn was recovered from businesses as compensation to consumers during the same period.

Hamoud bin Said al Jabri, director general of consumer services and market monitoring, CPA, said,

“The initiative will facilitate market control and save time and efforts.”

According to Jabri, since CPA’s establishment in 2011 until the third quarter of this year, the number of complaints received was 96,042.

He stated that the total amount recovered in compensations was RO16,237,562, while the fines imposed by the authority amounted to RO3,517,957 during the period from January 2012 to June 2021.

The number of violations recorded by CPA since its establishment till Q3 2021 and referred to the Public Prosecution for decisions was 53,882.
