1,000 seedlings to be distributed in Dhofar

30 Oct 2021 By MOHAMMED TAHA

Muscat – Environment Authority (EA) will distribute 1,000 seedlings of indigenous species for free in Dhofar to celebrate Oman Tree Day on October 31 in line with its efforts to plant 10mn trees by 2030.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Hatem Kalashat al Mahri, head of Biodiversity Department in the Directorate General of Environment in Dhofar, EA, said, “The authority will distribute about 1,000 seedlings of wild Omani trees, including sidr and al ghaf, for free to people in the governorate.”

According to Mahri, those interested can collect the seedlings from the directorate’s nursery in the Al Saada area of Salalah till stocks run out.

“The authority has set in place conditions for people who want to obtain seedlings. Recipients will be given one seedling each and must be prepared to take proper care of it – watering, fertilising and pruning it. The authority hopes to stay in touch with recipients to follow up on the growth of the seedling,” Mahri said.

Specialists of the Directorate General of Environment in Dhofar, in coordination with volunteers, collected thousands of samplings of frankincense, sidr, samar and al ghaf trees from mountains and valleys to be planted in nurseries in Dhofar.

“As part of the national project to plant 10mn wild trees, the Directorate General of Environment in Dhofar has started a project to plant 150,000 trees, which will continue till the end of 2022. We call on citizens and residents to help preserve Oman’s environment and wild plants, and report any violations they witness,” said Mahri.

“We cooperate with volunteer teams in all wilayats of Dhofar to eliminate agricultural pests, and mesquite trees.”
