18 Aug 2021

The Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MoHERI), in cooperation with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), launched the second phase of the national education-related training programme – Edaad – on Wednesday for penultimate year students who are studying in public and private higher education institutions.

According to the ministry, Edaad is a full academic year programme that provides systematic and sufficient training opportunities for university students and also provides higher education institutions with feedback on the knowledge and skills they need to include in their study programmes.

H E Dr Rahma bint Ibrahim al Mahrouqi, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, said, “Edaad is an ambitious national programme that works to prepare national competencies with dynamic capabilities and skills that help trainees compete in the labour market.”

“The programme is in line with the strategic direction of Oman’s Vision 2040 towards inclusive education, sustainable learning and scientific research that leads to a knowledge society and competitive national capabilities,” she said.

The inauguration ceremony included the signing of a number of cooperation protocols between the industrial and academic sectors aimed at supporting the plans of the programme to link the two sectors, training students of private higher education institutions and building their capacities.

Dr Salim bin Khamis al Abri, assistant director general for Programmes and Quality Assurance at the Directorate of Private Universities and Colleges, said, “The programme seeks to gradually expand the number of students who are absorbed annually.”

“In its first session, there were engineering majors in five universities, and is currently seeking to include all public and private universities with a plan to enrol 85 per cent of students studying inside and outside the sultanate by 2040,” he added.

The MoHERI also signed a cooperation agreement with PDO to fund a hundred scholarships for diplomas in vocational colleges for the current academic year 2020/21.
