28 Jul 2021

The economic cost of the consumption of tobacco products in Oman is equivalent to one per cent of its GDP, according to a new GCC-wide survey. The survey showed a clear increase in the economic cost of tobacco consumption in the GCC countries in general and the sultanate in particular.

This was revealed when the National Committee for Tobacco Control convened its 11th meeting under the chairmanship of H E Dr Mohammed bin Saif al Hosni, Undersecretary for Health Affairs in the Ministry of Health.

The meeting reviewed the composition of the committee; new members were added from Sultan Qaboos University and other concerned authorities. The meeting touched upon the results of an economic cost survey of smoking and second-hand smoke exposure in the sultanate and GCC states carried out under the supervision of the Health Council.

The committee highlighted the importance of a media plan in promoting awareness on the hazards of tobacco products. During the meeting, it was agreed to form a joint team to develop a media plan. The team will consist of representatives from several ministries and Oman Cancer Association.
