Ministry holds virtual programme for special education schools

24 Jul 2021

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has carried out the first virtual summer programme for special education schools throughout this week under the slogan ‘We continue for you’.

The ministry, represented by the Directorate General of Special Education and Continuous Learning, organised the programme under the patronage of Dr Ali al Shukaili, director general of the Directorate General of Private Schools at the ministry.

‘In its first edition, the virtual summer programme targeted special education schools’ students in their three categories – verbal, visual and mental – across the sultanate’, the MoE said.

It said that the aim of the programme was to provide the participants ‘with the necessary knowledge and skills, which would enable them to improve their educational achievement, discover and refine their talents, support their experiences, and develop their various skills’.

‘The virtual summer programme also aims to direct these students’ emotional behaviour, intellect and energies in a positive way in order to protect them from the negative effects of the void during their summer vacation, as well as training them on skills such as public speaking,’ the ministry said.

On the importance of the summer programme for students of special education schools, Dr Fathia al Sidiyah, director general of the Directorate General of Special Education and Continuous Learning at the ministry, said, “This summer programme comes in continuation of the efforts of the Ministry of Education to present its educational mission, and to enhance its societal role outside the actual study times for students, by providing educational activities in which knowledge is mixed with application and entertainment in a flexible manner in a virtual educational atmosphere.”

The first virtual summer programme covered a number of activities with training in practical workshops suitable for students with disabilities that helped them discover and develop their talents, and enhance their self-confidence, the MoE said.
