Artificial reef project in Dibba completed

20 Jun 2021

In a move to boost fisheries resources in the sultanate, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has completed an artificial coral reefs project in Dibba in Musandam governorate.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, an official in the ministry informed that the Musandam Fisheries Department started the project in January 2019 with funding from the Agricultural and Fisheries Development Fund.

The final stage of the industrial reef construction project is complete with the landing of four units of artificial reefs in the sea.

The project included designing, manufacturing and deploying artificial reef units.

“The project is part of strategic plans to develop the fisheries sector. The ministry aims to enhance fish stocks and biological diversity in the sultanate’s waters,” the ministry official said.

In 2019, the ministry launched its largest artificial coral reef off the coast of Suwaiq spread over an area of 20km x 7km.

The project, called Suwaiq Marine Farm Artificial Reef Complex, has 4,280 coral reef units.
