An Naman Zoo in Barka has an added attraction – a full-grown lion called Alex.
Visitors have been flocking to see Alex ever since he came down, said Ahmed al Balushi, owner of the zoo.
Alex is the fifth big cat to make An Naman its home; two had passed away a few years back and right now a brother-sister duo (three years each) is there.
“Alex is comfortable with his new friends,” Balushi said.
“He is a fierce animal but doesn’t attack unnecessarily. He is polite and gentle. He came to the zoo last week and is playful and happy. Children love him and people admire his grandeur, colour and royalty.”
Balushi said Alex is a gift from a close friend and is well looked after at the zoo and doctors are always around.
The eight year old lion consumes about six to ten kilograms of meat everyday.
After the addition of Alex the number of visitors to the zoo has swelled, Balushi said.
“We have visitors from various nationalities and children are the most excited ones.”
According to Balushi the zoo is being maintained solely for education purposes.
“Many people cannot travel abroad to see animals, and this zoo is a good chance for such people to witness animals from different places and different habitats,” said Balushi.
An Naman zoo is one the only zoo in Oman and has different animals and birds, including tigers, ostriches, chimpanzee, foxes, hyaenas, hedgehogs, iguanas, hares, horses, monkeys, oryxes, lamas among many others.
