PDO’s Yibal Khuff mega project hits key milestone

31 May 2021

When fully operational, the Yibal Khuff field will deliver 6.1mn standard cubic meters per day of associated gas and around 21,900 barrels per day of oil

Petroleum Development Oman’s (PDO) Yibal Khuff project, the most complex and second largest project in size in the company’s history, has achieved a key milestone ahead of the commissioning, according to the engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCm) contractor Petrofac.

‘Our team delivering the massive Yibal Khuff project for PDO has safely achieved an important milestone with the introduction of sweet hydrocarbons to the central processing facilities,’ Petrofac said in a project update statement on its website.

The Yibal Khuff project is technologically complex due to its mega high sour oil and gas content. Awarded in 2015, this mega project was Petrofac’s second EPCm contract with PDO. The integrated oil and sour gas facility is located approximately 350km south-west of Muscat. Said Harrasi, PDO’s Yibal Khuff project engineering and procurement manager, commended everyone involved in the project.

He said, “A great thanks to the entire Petrofac team who worked day and night to ensure the achievement of this milestone. Please also convey our gratitude and appreciation to all team members in Sharjah, Chennai and the Muscat offices.” Khalid Abdul Kadar, Petrofac’s project director, said, “We appreciate the extraordinary team efforts during this prolonged pandemic period. We continue towards achieving the next commissioning milestones safely and for a successful plant operation.”

When the project is completed and plant becomes fully operational, the Yibal Khuff field will deliver 6.1mn standard cubic meters per day of associated gas and around 21,900 barrels per day of oil.

The development of the Yibal Khuff field will add to PDO’s future oil production, whilst the associated gas will be used for power generation and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) developments.

In 2015, Petrofac was awarded its second contract with PDO for the Yibal Khuff project at a value of around US$900mn. The UK-based Petrofac, a leading international service provider to the energy industry, has been working in Oman for more than three decades, helping its clients to unlock more value from their hydrocarbon resources.

Petrofac has a long-term framework agreement with PDO for the provision of EPCm support services for major oil and gas projects in the sultanate.

The projects undertaken through the framework agreement are supported by the company’s Muscat office for technical delivery and to ensure it generates sustainable in-country value.
