As many as 4,000 plots of land are ready for handover to eligible applicants, according to H E Dr Khalfan al Shueili, Minister of Housing and Urban Planning.
In an interview with Oman TV, H E Dr Shueili said, “The ministry has given away about 343,0000 plots of land in various governorates of the sultanate during the past ten years, 78 per cent of them were allotted to women.
“Giving Omani families the right to own property is one of the most important objectives of the new law. After Eid al Fitr, the ministry will launch a programme to study requests for land and create a specific mechanism to determine the eligibility.”
He added that all existing applications will remain valid and will not be cancelled and dealt with professionally.
“But priorities will change and be reconsidered. There are currently 447,000 applications for all of Oman, 120,000 of which are for the Governorate of Muscat.”
There are many requests for social housing, and the ministry has distributed 500 social housing at a value of RO15mn. “We have the housing aid programme with a budget of RO20mn.”
The minister clarified that the law does not link right of a person to a plot of land and marriage, “as every person who has never been married has the right to submit an application”, he said.
