Omanisation targets shopping malls

2 May 2021

MoL sets July 20 date for compliance with Omanised professions

The Ministry of Labour (MoL) has directed owners of shopping malls and supermarkets to adhere to Ministerial Decision No 8/2021, which stipulates that certain professions in these establishments will be restricted to Omanis starting July 20, 2021.

According to the decision, jobs of customer service, cashiers, currency exchange, administration and shelf stackers in shopping malls and supermarkets will be limited to Omanis.

The ministry urged adherence to the decision in order to avoid penalties against violators. Work permits in the mentioned categories will not be renewed for non-Omani workers after expiry.

H E Dr Mahad bin Said bin Ali Ba’owain, Minister of Labour, issued decision No 8/2021 Omanising these professions in the private sector in January this year.

Besides these positions in shopping complexes, the decision also Omanises financial and administrative professions in insurance companies and companies operating in insurance brokerage activities.

The decision is also applicable to all sales jobs dealing in new and used vehicles, all accounting professions engaged in selling new and used vehicles in car agencies as well as the activity of selling spare parts in divisions of auto agencies.

MoL had earlier stated that 32,000 jobs and 10,000 training opportunities for Omanis will be created this year. Additionally, it announced on Saturday that during the first quarter of 2021, it facilitated provision of 10,196 jobs in both the government and private sectors, which is 31.6 per cent of the target for the year.
