To spread the spirit of solidarity in the wilayat of Sohar, Takaful Sohar Social Charity Team is distributing 285 iftar meals every day during Ramadan.
Operating under the umbrella of Committee for Social Development in the Ministry of Social Development in Sohar, the team comprises 15 board members and more than 120 volunteers.
Started in 2012, Takaful Sohar Social Charity Team has several charitable initiatives running under the slogan ‘Takaful Sohar’.
Speaking to Muscat Daily, Ali al Balushi, head of the team’s media committee, said, “Every day of the month, we’ll prepare 285 iftar meals for distribution from 4.30pm to 6pm among needy families, families with limited incomes and expat workers.”
The meals are prepared in coordination with Omani families. “We also distribute Ramadan baskets, that include foodstuff such as rice, oil and flour. We will give away 2,000 baskets this Ramadan,” Balushi informed.
In June 2020, the team distributed financial aid worth RO57,308 among 412 low income families and 549 orphaned children. It strives to meet the urgent needs of families with limited income in Sohar through several programmes, including housing, financial aid, food assistance and medical supplies.
“We sponsor 610 orphans and look after their nutritional needs,” Balushi said. In efforts to improve the living standards of families under social security, the team has built new houses – 59 to date – and refurbished old ones.
“We have received financial support from many people to do our work and seek cooperation of other volunteer teams and communities in Sohar to help poor families. The team will also implement an initiative to help families during Eid al Fitr. We will offer Eid clothes and meat,” Balushi said, adding that efforts are on to arrange funds for prisoners’ release as part of the Fak Kurbah initiative. The team has secured the release of 71 to date.
