Muscat Airport becomes American Heart Association training centre

7 Apr 2021

Oman Airports Learning and Development Centre on Wednesday signed a new accreditation agreement acknowledging Muscat International Airport as an authorised international training centre accredited by American Heart Association (AHA) to provide AHA first-aid and cardiopulmonary recovery (CPR) training courses.

As per a statement, the agreement comes as part of Oman Airports’ integrated strategy to provide world-class healthcare services to travellers across its airports.

The agreement was signed remotely by Abdullah bin Saleh al Yafei, Oman Airports vice president of Support Services, and Michael Holly, AHA International vice president, in a virtual ceremony.

Oman Airports Learning and Development Centre is continuing its focus on broadening the circle of international accreditations received from major international aviation training institutions. The latest accreditation  came following the successful conclusion of multiple accreditation agreements with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Airports Council (ACI) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Oman Airports, represented by its Learning and Development Centre, has recently developed an integrated first-aid and CPR training programme in collaboration with the AHA, which targeted a number of Muscat International Airport employees to promote awareness of the importance of CPR as a life-saving tool and to provide guidance on health and safety to participants through a range of training packages.

“We are honoured by the recognition that Oman Airports Learning and Development Centre continues to receive from the world’s leading and reputable institutions for the level of professionalism and high-quality standards demonstrated by the centre, which earned us international recognition and accreditation for our pioneering work,” Yafei said.

“The signing of this agreement with AHA is a confirmation of our employees’ qualification and elevated responsibilities to offer and sustain the highest standards of training programmes.”

Yafei added, “With this agreement, Muscat International Airport becomes the first airport in the MENA region to be accredited by American Heart Association to provide AHA first-aid and CPR training courses. This achievement reflects the hard work and commitment of Oman Airports to develop emergency medical services at all of the sultanate’s airports during this period of serious public health concerns that the airport industry is facing around the world, by implementing health best practices and preventive measures to ensure health safety of all travellers.”

Oman Airports has provided and installed automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in the terminals of Muscat International Airport, in an initiative sought to achieve the highest level of timely medical and first aid emergency responses at the airport, thereby ensuring provision of immediate life-saving care for both travellers and airport employees in the event of health emergency. As part of this initiative, a total of 64 AED units were placed in different locations in the airport for use by first aiders in a timely and efficient manner in case of emergency. It is worth noting that the AEDs provided by Oman Airports are simple and efficient to use, and can be safely used on both adults and children.
