H H Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham al Said, Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, on Tuesday issued a inisterial decision to set up a high-performance sports committee.
H H Sayyid Theyazin will head the eight-member committee, which also includes Oman’s football great Ali al Habsi.
Besides Habsi, the Undersecretary for Sports and Youth at the ministry, has been made the deputy chairman of the committee. The other members include the chairman of the Oman Olympic Committee (OOC), secretary-general of the OOC, minister’s advisor for sports planning, director-general of planning, director-general for administrative and financial affairs and sports ministry’s director-general of sports activities, who will serve as rapporteur.
The decision envisages a comprehensive development strategy to be carried out within a fixed time frame and to contribute to Oman Vision 2040. The committee aims to create a system to groom the talented athletes, who have the potential to qualify and reach international level and Olympic standards.
The committee will set up policies, programmes and plans to sharpen and nurture skills of high-performance athletes from different sports. The selected athletes will be fully supported to achieve success at international levels.
