Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) on Tuesday officially opened Al Wusta Sports Hall, Haima Slaughterhouse and livestock market and the revamped Haima camel racetrack under the auspices of H E ShaikhSulaiman bin Salim bin Saif al Mahrouqi, Wali of Haima.
The projects were funded by PDO as part of its social investment programme to benefit communities and boost sustainable development across the sultanate.
Jointly funded by PDO and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, Al Wusta Sports Hall serves the youth in Haima and the surrounding villages and aims to supplement the sports and culture sectors in the area. The facility, which also includes a dedicated seating area for spectators, is suited for five different sports and can be used to host cultural events.
The slaughterhouse and livestock market is a municipality-managed project that aims to centralise livestock sales and meat processing activities to promote hygienic practices. The project, which will serve the Wilayat of Haima and the surrounding areas, has a compound for selling livestock and meat cutting stations along with a waiting room.
The maintenance of the Haima camel racetrack, which was funded by the company, included a number of improvements such as setting up a new podium, installing shades and adding new areas for spectators.
PDO has been actively supporting local communities and is currently developing a number of infrastructure projects in partnership with governmental bodies to provide communities with better access to key services and amenities as part of its social investment programme.
In Al Wusta Governorate specifically, PDO has also provided specialist medical equipment and ambulances for Haima and Al Jazir hospitals, and is currently working on several projects in the area including a food and water control laboratory and a fish market in Haima.
