The long and short of hair extensions

8 Mar 2021

If you always dreamed of having long tresses but wasn’t able to sport it with ease, there is no need to feel disheartened. Hair extensions are your best friend in this regard, and if you do it right, no one would ever find out.

Aside from varying hair options, there are also many different techniques used to install extensions. Some of the most common practices are clip-ins and sew-ins, but another popular method hairstylists are using in salons these days is hand-tied extensions.

The best hair extensions are those that blend in well with your own hair and also suit your personal lifestyle. So, if you are one who showers often, dances, works out, swims, or play sports regularly, then clip-in hair extension would be the best solution for you as they can be taken off when not wanted.

Clip-in hair extensions are, obviously, a good option for short haired ladies. If you have recently got a haircut you are not happy with or have difficulty growing your own natural hair, then such hair extensions can solve your problem. They are easy to use and provide long hair in just a matter of minutes.

Clip-in hair extension wefts come with clips attached and you can simply clip them into your hair by yourself, without any additional costs, time, or professional help. They are the perfect solution for those who are looking to get thicker hair and longer hair instantly.

With a little bit of practice, clipping in hair extensions is very fast and easy. You need to simply snap the clips open and clip them close to the roots of your hair. They will stay securely in your hair without showing. Your own hair needs to be at least 15-20cm long to be able to use clip-in hair extensions to blend naturally. If your hair is shorter, you may experience some trouble  hiding the wefts in your hair.

Benefits of hair extensions

Length

If you experience hair loss or have difficulty growing out your natural hair, hair extensions help you achieve long hair again, and do not hinder hair growth in the meantime. If you got a bad haircut and want to cover it up, hair extensions will do just that.

Colour

If you want to change the look of your hair and add in highlights without damaging your natural hair, or don’t want to fully commit to the look for a long term, hair extensions will allow you to be experimental with your hair without the full-time commitment.

Volume

If you suffer from hair loss or thinning hair, hair extensions will help you achieve the volume you once had. If you simply want to opt for a more voluminous hair look on special occasions or even for everyday use, hair extensions will create your hair dreams.

Style

If you want to change up your look, hair extensions will help make any hairstyle more fuller and longer. With an hair extension, you can attempt doing all those different hairstyle you always wished doing but couldn’t.

No damage

Hair extensions allow you to get experimental with your hair and different looks, without hindering your hair growth or causing damage to your natural hair. Other hair extension alternatives like bonding or tape-ins can cause damage to your hair.

How to wash hair extensions

Since hair extensions do not receive natural oils from the scalp like our own hair, they do not need to be washed very often. You may, however, wash them after every 15-20 wears or when there is too much product build-up and they become unmanageable to style. The key is, the less you wash hair extensions, the longer will they last.

Use sulfate-free and alcohol-free hair products on your hair extensions as these ingredients can dry the hair out, leading to frizzy, tangly hair. You can wash them the same way you would your own hair, in a sink filled with water.

One can apply shampoo first, rinse off, then apply a generous amount of conditioner from top to bottom, working the product through the hair. Rinse off the conditioner, then rinse the extensions again in cold water to lock in moisture.

Next, apply a deep conditioning hair mask throughout the extensions to restore smoothness and shine. Leave the hair mask in for at least 4-6 hours or overnight for best results. Finally lay each weft flat to air-dry on top of a towel on a flat surface.

Sleep, swim, sport

It is not a good idea to sleep with our hair extension on as they can get tangled during sleep, causing damage to the extensions as well as your natural hair. Since they only take a few minutes to clip in, and seconds to remove, always remove them before sleeping.

It is also not recommend to swim with your extensions clipped in as chlorine from swimming pools, salt from ocean water, and dirt in all bodies of water can be damaging to your them. Swimming with your extensions clipped in may also lead to the extensions tangling with your natural hair.

Also, avoiding any physical activity that could lead to excessive sweat when you are wearing hair extensions. Remember, your sweat is salty, acidic and can dry out your hair extensions so this could lead to additional matting and tangling.
