The Government of India’s gift of 100,000 made-in-India AstraZeneca vaccines was handed over by Ambassador Munu Mahawar to Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Sa’eedi, Oman’s Minister of Health, at a ceremony held in the Ministry of Health on Sunday.
Dr Sa’eedi welcomed India’s gesture to gift 100,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine.
He clarified that the vaccine will provide protection for everyone, and that its effectiveness, safety and results are laboratory-confirmed. An interval of at least four weeks between the first and second doses is important when taking the AstraZeneca vaccine.
Mahawar highlighted the strong cooperation between the two countries in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. “India has always shouldered global responsibility at times of crisis and is a dependable and reliable friend of Oman,” he said, and thanked His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and the Government of Oman for taking good care of Indian nationals during the pandemic.
Prior to the delivery of the vaccines, a training programme, covering administrative and operational aspects, was conducted by India’s Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, which was attended by Oman’s Ministry of Health officials.
India is the world leader in vaccine production with strong R&D capacity. Currently, about 30 groups – both academia and industry – are actively involved in development, collaboration and trials of COVID-19 vaccines.
Two made-in-India vaccines have received Emergency Use Authorisation in India.
The gift of the COVID-19 vaccines to Oman is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment that India’s vaccine production and delivery capacity would be used to help all humanity in fighting this crisis. India has already supplied COVID-19 vaccines to a number of countries.
The delivery of vaccines is another landmark in the strong cooperation between the two countries.
The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the resilience of India-Oman strategic partnership, as close engagement and cooperation have continued in addressing the urgent matters related to the pandemic.
India looks forward to continuing its work closely with the leadership and the Government of Oman to further strengthen the strategic partnership.
