Saud al Mukhaini from the wilayat of Sur, South Sharqiyah, has designed a micro weather station device for use by outdoor workers and adventure enthusiasts. Billed as the smallest weather station in the world, the device is being manufactured by BRQ Advanced Technology and will be launched in June 2021.
Speaking to Muscat Daily, the 24-year-old mechanical engineering alumnus of Sur College, said, “I am interested in the weather. The idea for this device emerged following my need for a micro weather station that I could carry around with me. My study of mechanical and electronics engineering was useful in developing and designing the device.”
Mukhaini established BRQ Advanced Technology in November 2020 and the device has been branded ‘BRQ-Micro weather station’.
The micro weather station provides accurate data, including temperature, pressure, humidity, dew point and heat index. The device works without Internet connection; it has nanometric sensors and a screen displaying weather data required by outdoor workers and adventurers.
Mukhaini’s biggest challenge in designing the device was downscaling it. “Sourcing parts and raw materials was another problem.”
Additionally, there were shipment delays as a result of COVID-19 movement restrictions.
“This micro weather station device is a great opportunity to let the world know more about Oman and the pioneering role it played in the field of navigation and weather forecast.”
