Land borders closed from 6pm Monday

17 Jan 2021

The Supreme Committee in charge of dealing with the COVID-19 outbreak has decided to close land borders of the sultanate for a period of one week, starting from 6pm on January 18.

The Supreme Committee held a follow-up meeting on Sunday to review the report of the specialised technical team on the spread of the new COVID-19 strain (first reported in the UK) and means of protecting everyone from the virus in general, and the new variant in particular.

‘The closure may be extended after an evaluation of the situation,’ the committee statement said. It took serious note of the growing negligence observed among some residents and citizens who weren’t adhering to the preventive measures.

‘Some people are not wearing masks and do not follow social distancing. This has led to the spread of the virus and violators will be dealt with accordingly,’ it warned.

‘The Supreme Committee reaffirms that the authorities concerned are pressing ahead to nab offenders and impose fines against those who breach its decisions,’ the statement added.
