Environment Authority continues to spread awareness on dangers of plastic

13 Jan 2021 By MOHAMMED TAHA

The Environment Authority is organising awareness campaigns and activities in different governorates to educate people on the impact of plastic.

The authority, in cooperation with government and private organisations, carried out a campaign to clean Mirbat beach and planted local species of trees to celebrate Omani Environment Day. It also carried out several activities and awareness lectures on plastic and its danger to the environment and on biodiversity, and distributed eco-friendly bags in Dhofar governorate.

Through the Directorate General of Environment in  South Batinah and the Directorate General of Environment in Dakhliyah, it carried out awareness campaigns in a number of centres and shops, and distributed environmentally friendly bags.

The Environment Authority has cooperated with several bodies such as the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, the Consumer Protection Authority, and the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion to spread awareness on the importance of using such bags.

‘With the increasing use of plastic bags, there is a grave concern about their impact on wildlife and marine life. These wastes can remain forever on the seabed. There should be serious commitment to solve this problem,’ the Environment Authority stated.
