Effective control of pandemic

10 Jan 2021

It has been a year of decisiveness and strong will that defined the rule of Oman under His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik. His Majesty the Sultan had to face the global issue of the COVID-19 pandemic no sooner than he had taken over the reins of the country.

To cater to the situations arising from the pandemic, His Majesty the Sultan issued a Royal Order to form a Supreme Committee in March 2020.

In a statement, the Diwan of Royal Court had said, ‘His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik issued his Royal Order to form a Supreme Committee to study scopes for a mechanism to handle developments resulting from the coronavirus (COVID-19) in light of fresh data and updated indicators from the World Health Organization on this topic.’

The Royal Order stipulated the formation of the Supreme Committee under the chairmanship of the Minister of Interior, with a number of top officials as members. The committee was tasked with monitoring the developments of the virus and regional and international efforts to contain it.

‘The committee will also have the duty of following up all procedures taken in this regard and devising suitable solutions, proposals and recommendations in accordance with results of the general health evaluation,’ the statement said.

The committee has the discretion of seeking instruments and necessary measures to ensure the success of the tasks entrusted to it.

In a personal gesture to support the efforts to stem the pandemic, His Majesty the Sultan donated RO10mn to the fund established for this purpose.

Valuing the initiatives of the private sector and individuals lending support to government efforts to shoulder this national duty, he expressed appreciation for all the efforts – of health workers in particular – to contain the pandemic.

His Majesty the Sultan reaffirmed that the government will spare no effort in addressing the pandemic and limiting its propagation with a view to safeguard the health of citizens and residents.

He stressed that these efforts cannot achieve their objectives except through the cooperation of all, citizens and residents, and their compliance with decisions, guidelines and instructions issued by the Supreme Committee.

He instructed the departments concerned to be firm in applying the law in a manner that ensures the abidance of all with collective action to impede the spread of the virus in society.
