The Ministry of Health (MoH) started a workshop on training trainers on the instruction manual for school mental health services on Tuesday in the presence of Dr Bader bin Ali al Habsi, director of Al Massara Hospital, at City Seasons Hotel.

The three-day workshop is being organised by the ministry, represented by the Directorate General of Primary Health Care, Department of School & University Health, in cooperation with Al Massara Hospital and the World Health Organization.

The Department of School & University Health has prepared the instruction manual for  school and university health services to enhance mental health at schools. The training workshop, being conducted by a selection of trainers specialised in mental health, targets 23 school health nurses across the sultanate.

Faiqah bint Ali al Sinani, MoH’s director of School & University Health, underlined the importance of mental health at schools and the early detection of psychological symptoms. She also praised the WHO’s role in this regard. Most mental health problems emerge during adolescence period.

The workshop seeks to qualify the trainers on understanding the social and psychological development of students, identifying roles and responsibilities of professionals in mental health services, and on how to perform an initial assessment for the students in order to identify those with psychological difficulties.

In addition, it aims to integrate mental health in the school activities, enhancing the school environment to be a health-promoting environment and training the participants in dealing with the most common psychological problems in schools.
