The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources on Monday signed an agreement with Towers International Group to establish and invest in a fish collection centre in Hitam in the wilayat of Duqm in Al Wusta governorate.
The agreement aims to increase investment and development of fishery industries in Al Wusta governorate. The centre will include a fish handling hall, refrigeration stores and ice production plants, as well as investment support projects and workshops for the maintenance of boats in an area of 10,000sqm.
The ministry also aims to raise the quality of fish products and provide the necessary services such as cleaning and packing of fresh fish obtained from fishermen and providing job opportunities.
Meanwhile, the ministry launched several projects to support the fishery sector by modernising boats, launching fish farms, setting up fish markets and creating artificial breeding grounds among coral reefs in Suwaiq to boost volumes.
Fish production increased by 4.8 per cent to 580,000 tonnes in the sultanate in 2019, compared to 553,000 tonnes in 2018, according to official statistics released recently.
The National Centre for Statistics and Information said artisanal fishing accounted for 96 per cent of the sultanate’s total fish production in 2019.
