Sheikh Nawaf takes oath as Kuwait’s 16th Emir

Sheikh Nawaf al Ahmed al Jaber al Sabah took oath before the Kuwaiti National Assembly on Wednesday to become the 16th Emir of Kuwait.

“I swear by Almighty Allah to respect the Constitution and the laws of the state, to defend the liberties, interests and properties of the people and to safeguard the independence and territorial integrity of the country,” the emir said. 

The Amiri Diwan had announced the passing away of Emir Sheikh Sabah al Ahmed al Sabah on Tuesday, and the government held an extraordinary meeting to named Sheikh Nawaf as Emir of Kuwait. 

Sheikh Sabah’s body was transported from the US in a Kuwait Airways plane and received by Sheikh Nawaf and several officials and security forces at Kuwait International Airport. 

Sheikh Sabah was buried on Wednesday at the Sulaibikhat Cemetery, the largest and main cemetery in Kuwait, following funeral prayers performed at the Bilal bin Rabah Mosque. The body was carried by close family members for burial.

Addressing the parliament after taking oath on Wednesday, Sheikh Nawaf said Kuwait has been exposed to “serious challenges and difficult ordeals which we succeeded in overcoming through collaboration”, according to the official Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

He added: “Today, our nation is facing acute circumstances and critical challenges which can only be overcome by being united, as well as with the collaboration of faithful efforts for the best interest of Kuwait and its faithful people.” 

He reiterated commitment to the constitution and the democratic principles. “We affirm our keenness on our constitution and democratic practice, and we are proud that Kuwait is a state of law and institutions. We are keen on the spirit of one family, a virtue well known in our society in Kuwait,” he said.

Paying tribute to the late emir, Sheikh Nawaf said, “We have lost an icon who gave a lot to his country, people and his nation. He left a rich history full of achievements and remarkable accomplishments at local, Arab, Islamic and international levels.
