Male grooming has taken on varied proportions these days. From hairstyling/facials to manicures/pedicures there’s a lot men want to do at salons. But, it’s also important to follow a basic beauty regimen at home.

If you are a man, you don’t have to be in showbiz to take care of your looks or follow a beauty regimen. The pressures of modern living do compel men, too, to spend extra time every week grooming themselves these days. So, if you care about the health of your skin, your hair and your body, then you need to have a bit of a beauty regimen to look and feel good everyday. Check out these basic tips to keep your body happy:

Moisturise your skin

You take care of all the organs inside your body, but what are you doing to care for your largest organ – your skin? An adult carries around eight pounds of skin, so you need to make sure it’s healthy. Moisture is the number one way to keep your skin healthy. Drink plenty of water. And if your skin still feels a little dry, apply lotion after you shower.

Shave right

Shaving can cause irritation and in-grown hairs. Plus, men’s skin is more prone to sensitivity, so if you’re not using a shaving cream when you groom your face, you need to do so. Look for shave creams with soothing, anti-oxidant ingredients.

Soften your lips

There’s nothing to feel shy about using a lip balm. Lips age drastically and they can dry out fast. Throw a lip balm, preferably one with sun protection, into your pocket and apply it throughout the day.

Cleanse your skin

Women aren’t the only ones who need to wash and cleanse their faces. Pollution, dust, sweat and dirt from just daily activities can clog your pores. At the end of the day, you need to wash your face to clean all that gunk from your skin.

Use shampoos/conditioners

A man’s scalp also tends to produce more oil than a women’s, so you need a shampoo that can cleanse hair without over drying it.

If your hair is under two inches, you might be able to get by without using a conditioner, but if you have longer hair, you’ll definitely want to add a bottle of conditioner to you shower shelf.

Minimise wrinkles

In addition to keeping skin moisturised, your diet will help keep wrinkles to a minimum. Watery fruits and veggies help with hydration, which keeps skin youthful. Add watermelon, tomatoes, cucumbers and lemons into your diet. Also eat more cabbage. It contains vitamin C and vitamin A, both of which help erase lines. It also detoxifies the blood, and the fibre in cabbage pushes waste and toxins out of the body.

Brighten up your smile

Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you. Healthy, white teeth not only look nice, they’ll save you time and money at the dentist’s office. Brushing, flossing and using mouthwash on a daily basis lowers the risk of gum disease, cavities, bleeding and infections.

Get plenty of sleep

Do you have bags under the eyes? It could be because you’re not getting enough rest. The average adult needs between seven and nine hours of sleep. You can also reduce the puffiness by placing slices of cucumber or chilled raw potato on your closed eyelids. They also contain a skin-lightening enzyme that reduces dark circles around the eyes.

Those days when men cannot do a manicure, pedicure or use skin care products, are long gone! Today, we must take care of our grooming and hygiene; it’s only fair because our women already take a lot of effort for us. I for one, get my manicure and pedicure done frequently, I often visit skin clinics to get treatment and professional advise, dental care, etc. And I maintain a high level of hygiene always. @DanZak

I think there is a conflict between the tradition of being manly and tough and the urge/need to look good and contemporary. As Oman is part of the world that is transferring to a global village, I see more and more people shifting towards the relatively new trend. For example, nowadays, it is kind of normal for men to do a pedicure which was a ‘no no’ in the past. But as per my mentality, the biggest thing I would do is go in for a lazer procedure to shape my beard.
