Ministry working to tackle onion shortage

29 Aug 2020

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources is making all efforts to counter the onion shortage in the sultanate which resulted in the wake of current monsoons in the Indian peninsula leading to disruption of sea transport.

The ministry stated that the disruption led to shortage of onions in the Central Vegetables and Fruits Market in Mawaleh. It added that the ministry has formed a field team along with the market administration and traders to look for appropriate solutions and alternative sources to provide for the market’s need for onions as quickly as possible.

The ministry is coordinating with exporters and agricultural quarantine outlets at Al Wajajah, Sohar Port, Sohar Central Market and the Directorate General of Customs to facilitate the passage of shipment of onions and supply them directly to the Central Market.

‘These efforts resulted in the provision of 2,200 tonnes of Indian, Pakistani, Iranian and Egyptian onions, which led to stabilising the shortfall of onions in the market. Additionally, around 1,700 tonnes of onions are expected to arrive in the coming days,’ the ministry stated.
