To help low income families and those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, including expat workers, in the Wilayat of Sohar, Takaful Sohar Social Charity Team has distributed over RO57,308 in the month of June.
With the fund, the charity was able to help 412 families and 549 orphaned children over a period of a month.
Speaking to Muscat Daily, Ali al Balushi, head of the media committee, Takaful Sohar Social Charity Team, said, “We operate under the umbrella of Committee for Social Development in the Ministry of Social Development (MoSD) in Sohar. The team consists of 15 board members and more than 120 volunteers.”
The team, which was started in 2012, continues to run many charitable initiatives under the slogan ‘Takaful Sohar’. The team has also launched and completed several initiatives since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Such initiatives have targeted 91 Arab and Omani families, which included taxi and bus drivers, barbers and some private school employees to reduce their suffering due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“In June, our team distributed about RO57,308 of financial aid to 412 low income families and 549 orphaned children. The team aims to strive to meet the urgent and permanent needs of these families with limited incomes in the Wilayat of Sohar through several programmes. The team provides housing, financial and food assistance. The charity also contributes in providing medical supplies,” he said.
Balushi added that the charity’s aim is to improve the standard of living of families under social security. “We build new houses and refurbish them. The cost of refurbishing and building a house is between RO7,000 and RO25,000. We help those families whose monthly income does not exceed RO400.”
About future plans, he said, “We have received financial support from many people. We seek to cooperate with other volunteer teams and communities in Sohar to help poor families. The team will implement an initiative to help families during Eid al Adha. We will offer Eid clothes and meat. We continue to seek and create a strong financial support for the team and to arrange funds to get prisoners released as part of the Fak Kurbah initiative.
The team has also lunched a new initiative called ‘Sponsoring Them’, which is one of Takaful Sohar Team’s humanitarian projects, that seeks to create solidarity and cooperation among the community members. “Under the Sponsoring Them drive, we aim to find a sponsor to donate a monthly contribution to a needy family with a fixed amount starting from RO30 per month. We thank businessmen and private and governmental institutions for their support.”
