17 Jun 2020

Getting online education has never been more relevant for college students than now but there are many who do not have the necessary technological tools to avail distance learning.

Filling that gap is Al Rahma Association for Motherhood and Childhood, which has started an initiative to provide personal laptops to students/children of social security families and those with limited income.

The Al Rahma caravan on Tuesday started from its headquarters in Seeb, loaded with 500 portable computers (laptops), for students of social security families according to the list approved by the Ministry of Higher Education for eligible students.

The association, working under the umbrella of the Ministry of Social Development in cooperation and coordination with the Ministry of Higher Education, will distribute 500 laptops to male and female students studying in various government and private universities and colleges in the sultanate, the charity stated.

Rahima bint Habib al Musafer, chairman of the Board of Directors of Al Rahma Association, said that the devices are being distributed directly to the students’ doorstep through vans that started from the association in Seeb on Tuesday.

“This is the second batch of the laptops being distributed. In the first lot, 214 devices were provided under a community initiative launched by the association in cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education under the title ‘Do not come. We are with you. Education is continuing,’ in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

She added that the devices will help college students to continue their studies remotely in these difficulties times when studies in campuses have been suspended indefinitely.
