In this unprecedented time, when the world is reeling under the attack of coronavirus (COVID-19), religious and faith-based institutions and their teachings are positively contributing to preventing the spread of the virus and serving as a source of comfort for many.
His Eminence Shaikh Ahmed bin Hamed al Khalili, Grand Mufti of Oman, has called upon everyone to adhere to the instructions issued by the authorities to curb the spread of COVID-19 and to follow all preventive measures.
Sending his message though his Twitter account, the Grand Mufit said, “I call on all believers, men and women, to safeguard themselves, their families, their communities, and their nation, by refraining from getting together and to ward off the effects of the pandemic by committing to the safety norms.”
He further urged people to comply with safety regulations to avoid putting their relatives, and society, at risk. “Everyone is responsible in front of Allah for all their actions if they harm themselves or others. It is our responsibility, as per our religious beliefs, to stay away from each other, maintain physical distancing, stay indoors and stay safe,” the Grand Mufti said.
He added that this is a testing time and we need to pass it successfully. “To achieve this, one needs to increase prayers and be optimistic. We need to be patient in order to succeed in the testing time,” the Grand Mufti said.
Many reacted to the Grand Mufti’s comments saying his words were much needed to scale up the awareness. “I read Grand Mufti’s comments carefully and his words of wisdom made sense to me and, I believe, they will make a significant change among the public, in the way we behave. Indeed we need to follow the guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19 religiously,” Shaikh Naser al Jahdhami, an Iman at one of the mosques, said.
Others say, apart from following the guidelines religiously, there should be more stringent measures to catch those who do not follow the guidelines. “I have been following what the Grand Mufti has said but there is a need for the authorities to act on those who do not adhere to the guidelines,” Sleyyem Khalaf, a government employee, said.
With regards to those who fail to adhere to health requirements, ROP has issued guidelines asking people to report violations. ‘We call upon the public to contact us if they observe any unhealthy activities going on among the public. They can reach us through 9999, 24569186 or 24569183,’ an ROP statement said.
