Two young entrepreneurs from Dhofar, Mohammed Said al Shanfari and Badr Mustahil al Shanfari have responded to the need of the hour to produce hand sanitiser – infused with a substance that is quintessentially Omani – to help stem the spread of COVID-19.
Mohammed started Natural Frankincense Products in partnership with Badr in Salalah last year. “We are graduates of Dhofar University and licensed to distil and conduct research in frankincense. We have produced several other products using frankincense natural oil earlier, including frankincense hydrosol water and soap,” Mohammed told Muscat Daily.
Following the demand for hand sanitisers in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, their company started research and development of a product using frankincense natural oil.
“We began production on April 11 and currently produce 100 bottles a day. These are 70ml, 100ml or 200ml bottles,” Mohammed said. These are priced RO1.500, RO2 and RO3 respectively. “Our hand sanitiser meets European specifications – EU 98/8/EC and EAS 789:2013.”
Natural Frankincense Products has distributors across the sultanate, including MarkeetEx, to sell its products and doorstep delivery.
“We had difficulty obtaining raw materials to produce the hand sanitiser. The only way out for us was researching and finding alternatives in the local market,” Mohammed informed.
Natural Frankincense promotes its products via social media, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and WhatsApp.
“For any business to succeed, it needs thorough knowledge and understanding of the field. Running a business also involves a lot of self-development and administrative work,” Mohammed said.
He and his partner Badr are currently working on developing other products infused with frankincense oil besides exporting their current range.
