Remote areas to get Internet by year end

21 Apr 2020

All regions of the sultanate will be covered by telecommunications and Internet services via satellite before the end of this year, stated  H E Azza al Ismaili, Minister of Technology and Communications.

H E Azza said, “The Ministry of Technology and Communications, in coordination with the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, presented a proposal for an initiative to the Supreme Committee dealing with COVID-19 two weeks ago. The Supreme Committee approved the initiative called ‘Comprehensive Service’.”

The initiative targets about 500 to 700 villages which do not have telecom or Internet services due to the high cost of introducing them, the minister added.

“All regions of the sultanate will be covered by Internet services via satellite before the end of 2020. We thank His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and the government for agreeing to provide the service via satellite for a period of ten years.”
