Oman Power and Water Procurement Co’s (OPWP) CEO YaqoobSaif al Kiyumi has said that the gas-fired power plants whose contracts will expire by the end of 2021 are still competing to produce the specified capacities.
In a statement on Oman News Agency, Kiyumi said so far it has not been decided which power generation plants will be decommissioned during the first phase of 2021.
He said that determining the final required capacity will be closely associated with the growth or decline in power demand, adding that the capacities and bids are likely to be finalised during the second half of this year.
Speaking about the proposed new renewable energy projects, Kiyumi said the tenders for Manah solar power project and waste-to-energy project have not been floated yet. While Manah solar power project is under the stage of qualification of developers, the waste-to-energy project is still under feasibility study phase in the backdrop of a slump in electricity demand due to economic slowdown.
