Expatriates of Indian origin in Oman have been given time until June 30, 2020 to renew their Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) card.
According to a notice issued by the Embassy of India in Muscat, ‘This is to inform that the Government of India has decided to grant a temporary relaxation until June 30, 2020, in the following cases: In case, an OCI card holder below the age of 20 years has not got it re-issued on change of passport, he/she may travel on the strength of his/her existing OCI card bearing the old passport number. This is subject to the condition that along with the new passport, the OCI card holder carried the old passport mentioned in the OCI card.’
The embassy added, ‘In case, the OCI card holder has attained 50 years of age, and has got his/her passport renewed subsequently, but has not got his/her OCI card re-issued on renewal of the passport, he/she may travel on the strength of the existing OCI card along with the old and new passports. However, it is advised that OCI card holders take steps to comply with the existing guidelines and renew their OCI cards as required by the rules.’
The guidelines for the renewal of OCI cards, according to the embassy, are: ‘OCI cards need to be reissued each time a new passport is acquired by the card holder, up to the age of 20 years, and an OCI card is to be re-issued once on acquiring a new passport after completing 50 years of age. The re-issuance of an OCI card is not required each time a passport is issued to a card holder between 21 and 50 years of age.’
