26 Nov 2019

Muscat – The Ministry of Heritage and Culture (MHC), in cooperation with the University of Heidelberg, Germany, has discovered a cemetery comprising 45 graves in Mudhaibi. The cemetery was discovered in Mt Al Sulaili in the Governorate of North Sharqiyah.

According to the ministry, the graves measure 50mx80m and are believed to be from the Iron Age. An official at MHC said, “The site contains a settlement that dates back to the beginning of the Iron Age. It is believed to belong to those working in copper mining field. The ancient mine was 700m east, probably from the same era.”

Talking of the importance of the site, he said, “The excavated site shows copper mining was done in the early Islamic era. The stone buildings and graves at the site resemble nature-preserved huts over 3,000 years ago. The graves help us know the burial method that was used and other rituals of the times.”
