The Ministry of Transport celebrated the opening of the expanded commercial berth at Al Suwaiq Port on Sunday.
The ceremony was held in the presence of government and private sector officials, led by H E Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Ali al Futaisi, Minister of Transport.
The expanded berth stands at 300m long, 40m wide and 5m deep. This expansion will triple the handling capabilities and uplift the port’s load capacity to 2mn tonnes annually. With the addition, the port will be able to receive 10,000 tonnes tailored ships and have space for dry bulk cargo.
The opening of an expanded commercial quay wall at Al Suwaiq Port will boost the facility’s cargo capacity to accommodate 2mn tonnes per annum and create opportunities for enhanced trade flows and local investment.
H E Dr Futaisi said, “This expansion is an enhancement of Suwaiq’s position as a maritime window and a magnet for regional markets that contribute positively to the revival of the markets of the sultanate. This step will support the commercial and economic activities of the port and raise its capacity.”
Dr Ahmed al Abri, chief executive officer, Marafi, said, “The port business has been developing rapidly since its first commercial operations in September 2018. This step will increase the volume of cargo handling and increase the investment and commercial opportunities of the port.”
