The national beach handball team will fight for its third consecutive appearance in the sixth Beach Handball World Championships, to be held in Agadir, Morocco, in 2014. The Asian-leg qualifiers for the worlds, which is organised by the International Handball Federation (IHF) and treated as the Beach Handball World Cup, will be held in Hong Kong from May 15-28.
Oman coach Hamood al Hassani told Muscat Daily, “We have already started our preparations for the qualifiers. We don't know much about the competition format at this stage or which group we will be in. What we know is, it is going to be a tough challenge for us with opponents like Qatar, Pakistan, Bahrain and Kuwait in the race.”
Oman hosted the worlds last summer and finished eighth in the 12-nation competition. The sultanate had finished ninth in the 2010 edition in Turkey. Oman had also participated in the inaugural edition of the World Cup in Egypt in 2004. Hassani said, “We will start a week-long camp this Saturday. After that, we will travel to Qatar for two friendlies. We are also planning a preparatory camp in Hong Kong or Croatia before the qualifiers.”
