OCC beats BTT in a thriller

The Oman Cement Company (OCC), which comprises players from domestic league champion Ahli-Sidab Club, edged out Al Bashaer Tours & Travels (BTT) 71-68 in the fourth Oman Chamber of Commerce & Industry-Companies Basketball Championship (OCCI-CBC) at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex on Sunday.

Despite the loss, BTT, which comprises Nizwa club players, leads the standings by a onepoint margin over OCC. BTT has seven points and OCC has six. On Sunday, the match went into a tie-breaker fifth period after the four regulation quarters produced a 61-61 tie. The teams were tied at 16-16 in the first quarter.

In the second period, OCC took a narrow lead with a 12-11 finish. It extended its lead in the third quarter with a 19-11 result. BTT then made a comeback in the fourth phase, taking it 23-14 to take the match to a tie-breaker.

In the crucial fifth period, OCC won 10-7. In the day's other exciting match, Moka & More (M&M) snatched an 80-79 victory against Shams al Tafani Trad Est (STTE) 80-79. M&M won 19-12, 23-19, 28-13, 31-14. Nadir al Bahrani, executive director of tournament organiser STTE, said, “It was an exciting day for basketball fans. Both the games were closely contested.”

Standings: 1 BTT (7 pts), 2 OCC (6), 3 ORPIC (5), 4 M&M (4), 5 STTE (3), 6 Future Pipe Industries (2).
