Traffic Safety Expo 2012 to focus on safer driving habits

Muscat -

The Traffic Safety Expo 2012 will be held from October 16 to 18 at the Oman International Exhibition Centre. The three-day event will take place between 10am and 1pm and from 4:30-8pm as announced by Oman International Trade and Exhibitions, in coordination with ROP.

Construction can be a tricky business when drivers are used to a particular route to make it to their final destinations on a daily basis. Upcoming constructions along that route may not only impede the driver’s daily transport schedule but the negligence of proper road work operation management may lead to severe road accidents. Road work operations require careful planning so as to ensure the safety of construction workers and the general public. The role of traffic controllers and safety equipment is thrown into the spotlight in this regard.

Road construction involves reserving a part of the road for work area and using cones, arrow boards, warning signage, advisory signs, lane status boards, speed restriction boards to direct traffic on the road to a safer route.

Effective road work management involves proper use and maintenance of road signs, media releases on upcoming construction, proper training of traffic controllers involving use of proper clothing, removal of unnecessary road signage, maintenance of consistency of speed limits to site operations and traffic movements. Recently the Ministry of Transport and Communication in Oman gave its approval for 15 road projects worth RO203mn that will see construction of bridges, crossroads and related projects aimed at improving the road network in the country.

Just as construction companies work towards building up the infrastructure of the country, drivers on their part should assist construction companies by building up an attitude that caters to road safety.

Since it is not possible to avoid every construction zone, drivers must maintain speed limits, adhere to the various safety signage, avoid abrupt driving behaviours and maintain appropriate distances behind other vehicles, turn on their headlights and use indicators and remain aware of the positions of equipment, workers and other vehicles.
