Sur-based voluntary team distributes 300 iftar meals daily

Muscat -

Tayyiba, a voluntary group, in coordination with ROP, is distributing 300 iftar meal packets in Sur. It has also started a safe driving campaign titled, ‘Ramadan is safe without accidents’.

Walid Fayez Mubarak al Hajri, the team’s supervisor said, “The team, founded in 2014 comprising 30 members, works under the Sur Sports Club. Our members prepare meals from 4-6pm daily and then distribute them to drivers until Maghrib prayer.”

Speaking about the safe driving campaign in Ramadan, he said, “This campaign aims to reduce accidents, especially among the youth who drive fast before iftar.”

A member of the team stops and gives drivers iftar meals and flyers on tips to prevent accidents. “We also have a programme called ‘Saqi al Sayim’ as part of which members distribute water bottles in mosques at the time of iftar and Taraweeh prayer. After Ramadan, we organise mass weddings to help youth organise budget weddings,” Hajri said.

Talking about the challenges the group is facing, he said, “We face financial challenges but some organisations such as Oman LNG, Oman Indian Fertiliser Company and others have supported us. We aim to promote the culture and the spirit of volunteerism in the community. Volunteer work is all about teamwork, time management and good planning.”
