Right lane of Batinah Expressway likely to be used for trucks’ movement: MoTC

Muscat -

The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) is considering reserving a lane of the proposed four-lane Batinah Expressway for movement of trucks.

Addressing a recent gathering at the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, H E Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Salim al Futaisi, said, “We may reserve the right lane of the Batinah Expressway for movement of trucks to reduce pressure on other lanes.

“We have found that some trucks are carrying a load of 90 tonnes against the limit of 60 tonnes on some roads.”

H E Dr Futaisi said that the current pattern of road freight traffic is being taken into consideration to implement this vital project.

“As part of the project, the ministry has placed newly-bought five mobile weight testing devices at select junctions and borders to measure loads carried by trucks,” H E Dr Futaisi added.

“There have also been demands for construction of roads dedicated for the movement of freight traffic and raising the load limit.”

He said that the road linking Thumrait to Salalah Port in Dhofar governorate is one of the busiest in terms of movement of freight traffic in the country.
