Muscat -

The Ministry of Social Development (MoSD) with the help of anti-begging teams caught 1,152 beggars from several wilayats of the sultanate last year.

MoSD in a tweet stated that the maximum number of beggars were caught from Muscat governorate (630) followed by North and South Batinah (203), Dhofar (136), Buraimi (42), Dhahirah (22), Dakhliyah (12) and North and South Sharqiyah (7).

The statement shows that of the arrested, 225 beggars (152 males, 73 females) were Omanis and 927 expatriates. MoSD statement also shows that while 521 arrested were in the age group of 18 to 40 years, 386 were between 40 and 60 years. The arrested also included 100 people from the neighbouring countries.

They were referred to the concerned authorities for legal action. Article 297 of the Oman Penal Code condemns begging and imposes a prison term of not less than a month, not exceeding a year, and a fine of not less than RO50 and not more than RO100, the MoSD statement added.
