While an MoM official said that only two persons were in the lift when it developed a technical snag, eyewitnesses said there were three, and were rescued by a civil defence ambulance unit. “Two people were stuck and they are both doing fine,” the MoM official said without giving further details. However, an eyewitness said, “Two of the three had lost consciousness due to lack of oxygen in the elevator and were rushed to hospital.”
ROP sources said only one person was hospitalised. “The person stuck inside the elevator for nearly 15 minutes at around 8am on Sunday was rushed to Khoula Hospital by civil defence personnel. His condition is stable.” At the time of going to press, the man was still in hospital.
In a similar incident in Mabela, two children playing inside a car had to be rescued after they locked themselves in the vehicle's boot.
“A civil defence team rescued two children this morning (Sunday) in Mabela from the boot of their family car,” an ROP official said. The team had to prise open the boot. “The children were playing in the car. After a while, the parents heard loud knocks from the car and immediately called the ROP. The children are fine and did not need hospitalisation,” the official said. There were no details on how they managed to lock themselves inside.
