A middle-aged Indian man was arrested at Muscat International Airport on Monday morning for drinking at a duty free liquor store and stabbing himself in the abdomen with a broken bottle. "The man came to the shop and opened two liquor bottles and drank the contents.
“When told that drinking at the store was not allowed, he took a third bottle and smashed it on the floor. He then stabbed himself in the stomach with the broken bottle. We had to call the police,” a shop attendant at the airport said.
He was handcuffed and taken away. "We do not know why he did this. He has been taken for questioning,” a police officer at the airport said.
Airport officials said the man was to fly to Kochi in South India. "He was travelling to India via Doha. We do not know if he is mentally disturbed.
“He may have injured himself because he was drunk," an Oman Air official at the airport said.
This is the second such incident at the airport. Last year in September, another Indian passenger had stabbed himself in the abdomen with glass from a liquor bottle he had thrown on the floor. He was a transit passenger from Saudi Arabia boarding an onward flight to Thiruvananthapuram in India.
