Salalah 2 IPP to officially open on Thursday

The Salalah 2 independent power project (IPP) will be officially opened on Thursday in the Governorate of Dhofar under the patronage of H H Sayyid Shihab bin Tariq al Said.

Salalah 2 IPP has a capacity of 445MW, bringing Dhofar Generating Company’s capacity to 718MW across the two existing and new stations at a cost of RO240mn.

Eng Naef bin Mohammad al Awaed, CEO of Dhofar Generating Company told Oman News Agency, “The Salalah 2 IPP started its commercial operation on January 1, 2018, in addition to the existing 273MW plant, thus the company has become the largest producer of electricity in the Governorate of Dhofar.”

Awaed added that the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) will purchase the power produced from the new and old plants belonging to the company for 15 years under the power purchase contract signed between the two parties.

Dhofar Generating Company was established in 2015 with the partnership of Mitsui (45 per cent stake), ACWA Power (45 per cent stake) and Dhofar International Development and Investment Holding (ten per cent stake).
